So what is Asbestos, and what exactly is the problem with it?

Asbestos is the generic name for a variety of fibrous minerals found naturally in rock formations around the world. Because asbestos fibres are strong, durable and non-combustible, they were widely used by industry, mainly in construction and friction materials.

Commercial asbestos fibres belong in two broad mineralogical groups: serpentine (chrysotile) and amphibole (tremolite, actinolyte and others). When these asbestos containing products are disturbed, these microscopic fibers can become airborne and then be inhaled into the lungs where they can then cause serious health problems.

In the restoration industry, the most common sources of asbestos are chrysotile  containing  attic insulation products  sold in Canada from the 1920’s to 1990. Other products that can contain asbestos include sheet flooring, floor and ceiling tiles, asbestos cement , and drywall mud.

It is our company policy to test all drywall compound in homes built prior to 1990 to ensure that further work may be conducted in a safe manner.
